Facts and Events
John graduated Harvard College 1751 and went on to teach school at Exeter and married. His first wife died, and he remarried in 1761, at some point returning to Haverhill. In 1766, he built a house on Water Street that stood for over 100 years. He was ultimately one of the wealthiest and most influential citizens of Haverhill. Fire destroyed about 20 buildings on April 16, 1775, including a larger tavern owned by John. He was a member of the Provincial Congress in 1775, inspector of schools in 1789, and on the committee in 1778 to supply families of those soldiers from the town who were in the army. In 1789, when George Washington visited Haverhill on his "triumphant circuit" touring New England, he visited Mr. White's house for a glass of wine.[2] John's son Leonard married the daughter of the first senator of Massachusetts, Tristram Dalton, and himself was elected to Congress in 1811.
