John William Whalen was born in southern Indiana (according to Maude (Butler) Whalen, his daughter-in-law. Maude did not know exactly where he was born. John's son, Guy Earl Whalen who was the informant on John's death certficiate didn't seem to know exactly where he was born either. The death certificate just states Indiana. We have eliminated many of the John Whalens found in the 1860 census across southern Indiana except for one that is difficult to follow. In the 1860 census for Clark Co, IN, there is a young boy named John Whalen age 12 (making him born about 1848) in the household of William Adams and wife Sarah and daughter Mary. Also living in the household is Sarah's mother, Margaret Aitrin (probably Margaret Lewis who married John Akin 25 Jan 1827 in Clark Co, IN). I have found no record of another daughter of John and Margaret Akin that might have married a Whalen. It's possible this little boy is an orphan.
