!About 1852 the John Walters family came to the New Salem Section of Union Co, NC and settled along the Rocky River. In the Walters book by J. Durant Walters, deceased, it states that John died of typhoid fever. He died the year before the Civil War. He was spared the heartbreak of seeing one of his sons killed by this terrible tragedy, another wounded, & three of his sons in captivity as prisoners of war. John and Sarah had 13 children who scattered throughout the South before migrating westward.
