ch. 10 Jun 1810, Graveley, Hertfordshire: John son of William & Ann Warby
It would be easy to assume that this John Worbey is the one baptised at Great Wymondley in 1808, son of George and Charlotte: he claimed in the censuses to have been born at Great Wymondley some time around 1808-1811 and the 1808 John Waby is the only matching baptism there. However, when this John Worbey married Ann Balls in 1831 at Little Wymondley the witnesses were a William Waby and Amy Waby. The 1808 John did have a brother called William, but he was only six years old at the time, and he did not have a relative called Amy that can be identified. Conversely, the John Warby baptised in 1810 at Graveley, son of William and Ann, did have a sister called Amy and both a brother and a father called William. Moreover, William and Ann only briefly lived in Graveley - they had married at Great Wymondley in 1809, had their first two children baptised at Graveley in 1810 and 1812 but then returned to Great Wymondley before their third child's baptism in 1814. The John Worbey who married Ann Balls may therefore have considered that he was from Great Wymondley even though he was actually baptised at Graveley. Also, when we look to the John son of George and Charlotte baptised in 1808, he appears to have married Ann Stokes at Hitchin in 1831. Whilst that John in the censuses claimed to have been born in Hitchin, the baptisms of George and Charlotte's younger children do specify that the family lived in Hitchin rather than Great Wymondley itself. The marriage witnesses to some of John Worbey and Ann Stokes' children's marriages also make more sense if that John was son of George and Charlotte.
