- ↑ The estimated birth date of about 1674 is found in many places, for example, Source:Twitchell, Ralph E. Genealogy of the Twitchell Family, p. 15, where it says John "was born, probably in Medfield, Mass., possibly in Sherborn, about 1674, possibly earlier". No explicit justification is given, leaving the reader to assume it is based on his activity as a soldier in the Canada Expedition of 1690, presumably requiring him to be 16. This is incompatible with the court case against Joseph and Lydia for fornication before marriage in 1679 (see Lydia's page), which probably centers around the birth of Patience being less than 7 months after their marriage. The judgement against them calls Lydia his now wife a phrase that usually means he had a different wife earlier. Thus John's mother is almost certainly not Lydia. The same can be said of Edward, who also served in the Canada Expedition, and is mentioned on p. 11 ["must have been his [Joseph's] son"].
