John Toon was baptised on 10th March 1693 at Granby in Nottinghamshire, son of Henry Toon and his wife Deborah. Early in 1703, when John was only ten years old, his parents both died in quick succession: his mother at the end of March and his father a couple of weeks later in mid-April.

On 25th April 1727, aged 34, John married Sarah Harrison at Granby. The following year they had a son called George. Sarah died just a few months later, aged 24.

On 17th June 1729, John married again. His second wife was Jane Jolland. They went on to have a daughter called Mary the following year, who died when she was just a few days old. They also had a daughter called Elizabeth in 1734.

Jane died in 1739, leaving John a widower for a second time at the age of 46. John survived Jane by 24 years. He died at the age of 70, being buried at Granby on 16th February 1764.
