When they moved to Tadcaster in middle of the 18th century, their surname changed to Thurlwell from Thirlewell. John Thirlewell married Elizabeth(supposed Catherine) Tenant in Hipswell Church but another Elizabeth Tenant ( probably Catherine's sister or cousin) married someone else in same year. He worked as a well builder in famous Samuel Smith Brewery, Tadcaster about 1758. The original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use. The brewing water for ales and stouts is drawn from 85 feet underground. Later he worked as shoemaker in Tadcaster
