He served in Co. I, 36th Iowa Infantry during the Civil War. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Artiamisia "Artie" Manning, daughter of John and Ursula B. (Morgan) Manning. She was born 6 Mar 1841 in Clermont Co., Ohio and died 30 Apr 1890 in Numa, Appanoose, Iowa. They had seven children: Sarah Belle, Catharine I., Henry Martin, Susan Ursula "Lula", Mary Etta, Nettie Victoria and Joseph Charles. On 14 Dec 1892, in Numa, Appanoose, Iowa, he married Catherine "Katie" Varner. She died 30 Jan 1913 in Numa, Appanoose, Iowa. John and Artie are buried in Miller Cemetery, Numa, Appanoose, Iowa.
