Possibly the son of Samuel Sturgeon, but there is no evidence to confirm this relationship. He apparently lived near Robert Sturgeon, who is assumed (or possibly established) to be his brother.

    Based on new information received after writing most of the book, McCoy considers John to be a probable son in this family.

    born in Ireland about 1722, "said to have died in the 110th year of his age". Supposedly went to Nelson County, Kentucky, but McCoy could find no records of him there.
