- Some early researchers thought that this John Stuart was a son of James Stuart of the Cowpasture in Augusta County, who married Mary Ann Lafferty. This appears to be disputed based upon research by more recent work by several researchers. A different John Stuart appears to be their son based upon records in Rowan and Iredell County, North Carolina.
