"Uncle John Strahan Dead
"Mr. W.B. Pearson who lives in the Shady Grove community was in the city this morning on a business trip, and while here met the reporter and stated that the Shady Grove community was cast in gloom over the death of ‘Uncle' John Strahan.
"This morning about five o'clock members of the family went to the room of Mr. Strahan, and they found him dead in bed. Death having occurred sometime during the night. Yesterday Mr. Strahan was in apparently good health, having visited some of his children in the neighborhood. He was, however, complaining about his back hurting, but not sufficiently to cause alarm.
"Mr. J.G. Strahan, Sr. was about eighty years old and one of the old landmarks of Nacogdoches county. The Sentinel extends its sincere sympathy to the bereaves relatives in their hour of sorrow." (John G. Strahan, born 15 July 1827, died 25 September 1906, buried Shady Grove Cemetery)
