John was the son of Capt. John Stoddert (ca. 1703-1767) and Mariamne Truman Greenfield (ca. 1710-1750).
John resided on 500 acres of the tract “ Southampton Enlarged” on the Potomac River at Pomonkey Creek, in Charles County. This was a portion of the tract that his father had given to him, but never legally conveyed to him. This tract was later passed down to John’s younger brother Richard Truman Stoddert (1741-1769). John was a planter, who served on the Lower House of the General Assembly in Charles County from 1757-1763, and again in was elected to the Assembly in 1765, but died before the first session. At the time of his death, John’s estate was valued at 1,049.9.10 pounds current money, including 18 slaves, 8 books, and a parcel of small books.
John married Lucy Heabard Smallwood (1733-1768), the daughter of Bayne Smallwood (ca. 1711-1768) and Priscilla Heabard (d. 1784), of Stafford Co., Virginia. John and Lucy had the following son:
1. Maj. William Truman Stoddert, Sr. b. ca. 1751 "Southampton Enlarged", Charles Co., MD. d. 10-24-1794 Charles Co., MD.
m. Sarah "Sally" Massey (ca. 1754-1796).

Here lyes the body of John Truman Stoddert & Marianne his wife, who departed this life Mar. 4, 1765 in the 33rd year of his age, this stone is given in honor to his memory by his loving wife Lucy Heaberd Stoddert.
