"Nearly all writers make … John, son of William , identical with another John, early in Newbury, who married there, 2 [sic] Mar. 1669-70, Mary Chase, and went to Haverhill where he was the founder of one line of the family. There is however plenty of proof in the land records of Essex county that John, son of William and Elizabeth (Bitfield) Stevens went to South Carolina where he remained as founder of a southern family of the name. So John of Haverhill, earlier in Newbury, was not son of either of the two earlier immigrants mentioned (William and John who came from Caversham, Oxfordshire, in the Confidence)."[1]
