John STARK married Agnes CRAIG (d. 1741) (Provosts of Glasgow). Agnes was daughter of William CRAIG (Provosts of Glasgow). John STARK married Agnes CRAIG 10feb1707 in Glasgow (Latter Day Saints). Scottish archives have testaments and an eik (reg. Glasgow 26jan1737, 1738 and 1747) of John Stark, merchant, Provost of Glasgow. John STARK and Agnes CRAIG had a daughter Agnes STARK (Provosts of Glasgow). George Smith married Miss Wilson, daughter of John Wilson, Town Clerk of Glasgow, by Agnes Stark, daughter of John Stark, Provost of that city, in the year 1725. (The date 1725 must be incorrect as marriage date). The Provost was the son of Marion Morrison, daughter of James Morrison, a Lt. of horse in the Royal Army at the battle of Worcester (from “History of the Counties of Ayr and Wigtown” vol. 2 by James Paterson, Edinburgh, 1864, pp 406-409, chapter on Fairfull Smith of Auchindrane, supplied by G. JOHN STARK

Dates of election: 5oct1725, 4oct1726. John Stark was the only son of Malcolm Stark, merchant in Glasgow, and Marion, daughter of James Moresoun, dyer in Glasgow. He was baptised on 29oct1685 and admitted a burgess by right of his father on 9may1706 and was Dean of Guild in 1724 and 1725. On 10feb1707 he married Agnes, daughter of William Craig, merchant in Glasgow, by whom he had what M’Ure calls a “hopeful issue” - there were 17 of them. Of his numerous family most died in infancy, the follosing, however, are known to have reached maturity: Malcolm, who died 18may1730, aged 21 years, bequeathing 100 Scots pounds to the Merchants House. Richard, who was at Glasgow University in 1732 and who was served heir to his father on 21jan1740. James, who was at Glasgow University in 1738. Nothing is known of the subsequent careers of either Richard or James. Agnes married John Wilson, writer and town clerk of Glasgow. Marion married Andrew Scott, merchant in Glasgow. Margaret married John Miller of Wellhouse. John Stark died 19dec1736 in his 52nd year, bequeathing 120 Scots pounds to the Merchants House and was buried at the east end of the Cathedral Yard where his gravestone has been renovated by his descendants. Later the circumstances of the family appear to have altered considerably for in 1740 his widow petitioned the town council for assistance “being in great need and want”, her husband having left his affairs in great disorder; she was granted an allowance of 12 pounds stg. Annually. Mrs. Stark was buried on 5feb1741, and in March of that year the children were stated to be very young and in poor condition and 10 pounds stg. was granted.
