The accepted understanding is that three Spence brothers - John, Thomas and Alexander came from Scotland as part of the Presbyterian Plantation by Sir John Hume. They settled in the Moyglass area about 1667-1668. It is not certain whether the correct ancestor was John or Thomas, but the prevalence of the name John in later generations suggests John.
