  2.   At age 49 John enlisted in the Spanish-American War, the K Co. of the California Volunteers, a total of 18 months, as scout,sharp shooter, and Aide to General Lawton. He was mustered out of the service at the Presidio, San Francisco. 1899.
  3.   John wrote the "Odyse of Buckskin Johnny Spaulding." He had a pet raven he called "Nevermove" that sat on his shoulder. He rode a mule he called "Rebecca" with a pack burro he called "Jack". He was fluent in native tongues and sign-language. 1876 he became a scout and guide with a wagon train enroute to the Black Hills.
  4.   He was called "Buckskin Johnny Spaulding" because he tanned and made his own leather clothing. He remarked it was stronger and more durable to wear on the prairie and in the Black Hills near Belle Fourche and Deadwood, South Dakota.
  5.   Johnny married his sweetheart Nettie, after 55 years of seperation. In 1932 he died at the Napa Valley Veteran Home in California. He is buried there at the Veterans' Home Cemetery.
