Obituary of John J. Smalley

JOHN J. SMALLEY..

•John J . Smalley,, a former well known resident, of Carmel, died at 8 o'clock, Saturday evening, March 23, 1912, at the home of his son, William Smalley, Albion, Michigan. Mr. Smalley. was a son of the late James J. and Harriet Smalley, and was born the town, of Kent, but his boyhood and early manhood days were passed in Carmel. . His. father then was one of the most widely known and prominent residents of Putnam County, holding the office, of Sheriff one term and also represented the County twice as Assemblyman;at Albany.. Deceased was elected Sheriff of Putnam in November, 1864 and served the term of three years. 'Johnnie" Smalley as he was familiariy called by both old and young was a general favorite, his genial disposition and gentlemanly ways winning him friends among.all classes. Among the young people of. the village and vicinity, he jially popular and no social. gathering was complete without his presence When he left Carmel and settled in Michigan he married, but was a widower at the time of his death, his, wife having passed away some years ago. Mr. Smalley is survived by three sons J. Garfield, William A. and Arthur B. Smalley. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs.Victoria Foshay, and Hattie, wife of Edwin Knox, both of Danbury, so two half brothers and two half sisters, Joseph B. Smalley, of Carmel, and James Smalley, of Boston, Miss Elizabeth Smalley and Mrs Ada Jewel, of Carmel. - After the funeral services at Bath Mills,- Michigan, on Tuesday after• noon

The remains were placed in the vault at Albion, Michigan, to await the opening of spring when he will be laid to rest in the Perry Cemetery, where his.wife was buried some years ago.

John J. Smalley b. 1842 in Kent, Putnam Co. N.Y. d. 03-23-1912 in Albion MI. m. Mary E. Norscord Richardson abt.1878-79 in MI.

They had three sons (This is from Beers, J. H.,'Commemorative & Biographical Record of Dutchess & Putnam', 1897).

William Augustus Smalley b. 03-17-1878 in Eaton Co Brookfield twn. MI. d. 1951 in Merced Co. CA. m. Verna Henderson

Arthur Smalley b. 07-1879 in MI. No Children. Arthur stayed in Mi. married a woman named Clara ? no children. He died there. Don't know when.

J. Garfield Smalley b. 02-1882 in MI. No Known Children. Garfield went to school and MI. and went to Loma Linda Medical School in CA. He went to South America as a missionary and married a South American woman. They had one child (we think a girl). He died of a tropical disease there. That's the last we know of him.

Chester Smalley Howard Smalley Ferren Hoyt Smalley 05-27-1915 in Otsego Co. MI. d. 12-07-1982 (MY GRANDFATHER) m. Dorothy CAMPBELL March 20, 1935 in Santa Ana, CA.

Ferren and Dorothy were my grandparents.
