- JOHN N. SIMMONS JR.
John N. Simmons Jr and family lived in Walnut Township, Montgomery County,
Indiana where they sold land (which had originally been bought by his father
John Simmons Sr. from the heirs of Solomon Beck) on 9 Oct 1843. This 80
acres of land became known as Beckville, Section 12 of Walnut Township. In
1852 he bought land from William Bowman and in 1854 from Larkin Thompson in
Franklin Township next to land owned by his second wife's grandfather, Jesse
Enlow. In 1854 John Simmons Jr, John and Sarah Bowman Sr. and Robert S. and
Nancy Burke sold a parcel of land to James Strain (John's brother-in-law).
The Bowmans and Burks were related through John N. Simmons Jr's first wife,
Rebecca Loop.
On 21 March 1858, John and Jemima (Stewart) Simmons sold the rest of their
land in Walnut Township to George W. Farlow, a cousin. At the start of
the Civil War, they were living in Franklin Township. He alos owned a lot
in Darlington and land that originally had belonged to Henry Beck who
married Mary Farlow. In 1862-64, John and Jemima sold their land holdings
in Franklin Township to a number of people and moved to Warren County,
Indiana. The Simmons resided near State Line City on the Illinois border in
Steuben Township. John Simmons Jr. and Robert S. Burk were charter members
of the Simmons Lodge No. 240 Odd Fellows instituted May 1865 and named after
John Jr. He was the first Noble Grand. This lodge was renamed Illiana in
1868.
By 1867, the John N. Simmons Jr. family moved from Warren County, Indiana to
Madison County, Arkansas where they are found living in Prairie Township,
post office Hindsville, in 1870. It is not known exactly what year they
again moved west. This time to COWLEY COUNTY, KANSAS. In 1880 the Simmons
family resided in Richmond Township, Cowley County, Kansas. I have a
picture of John N. Simmons Jr. with a brother (the back says Willard but he
didn't have a brother named Willard that we know of so there is a bit of a
mystery there) taken in Dexter, Winfield County, Kansas by the M. K.
Littleton's Art Gallery (no date on photo). It is not currently known for
sure where or when John N. Simmons Jr. died or where or when his wife Jemima
(Stewart) Simmons died.

the second in Boone County, Indiana.
