John K. Shores was convicted of the May 1869 murder of William Wheatly of Somerset County in Somerset County Court on October 19, 1869. He was sentenced to six years in prison [he is enumerated in the 1870 census taken on 28 Aug 1870 in Somerset County, MD, so had either been pardoned, parolled or was free while appealing his conviction/sentence]. Wheatly was a 34-year-old resident of Somerset County, survived by a wife and four children. John K. Shores was alleged to have been 64-years-old, with nine children and intoxicated at the time of the murder.
