John married Elizabeth in 1843 and they lived in Decatur Twp., Lawrence Co. OH in 1850. Elizabeth apparently died by 1852 when John married Sarah (Snedigor) Johnson. She was his first cousin(?) and a widow, living in nearby Vernon Twp., Scioto Co. in 1850 with three small children, Rosanna, Lucy and John.

John and Sarah lived in Vernon Twp. in 1860 and 1870, where John worked in an iron furnace. By 1880 they are back in Elizabeth, Lawrence Co. OH, with several of John's sons nearby. John could not read nor write. Sarah Snedigor's niece Maria Snedigor (b. ca 1843) was living with John and Sarah in 1860, as well as Sarah's newly married daughter Rosannah and her family.

John may have married a Susan Baccus in the mid-1850's- she was supposidly the mother of either Tim or Tom.
