John Newton Shirley enlisted in the Confederate Army at Duck Spring, Alabama on April 7, 1862. He served as a private and 2nd sergent in Company B of the 48th Alabama Infantry Regiment until he was paroled in March of 1865 at Guntersville, Alabama.
