    John was a Menonite farmer who moved to 200 acres in Paradise township, York County, Pennsylvania around 1758. His wife was Barbara Huber or Hoover.

    He was listed on the DAR Patriot List as:
    "Shirk, John, b ba 1734, d 1783 PA, m Barbra Hoover, soldier PA"

    They lived in Paradise twp., York Co, Pa.

    When he died abt 1783, his 4 daughters were already married, and his 4 sons were given by the Court to guardians. Three of these guardians (Frederick II, Jacob, & Joseph Leathers) were brothers, all sons of Frederick Leder I who had come to America on the same ship with Ulrich Schurch I, so they knew each other well. These 3 men were also born in Lancaster Co, Pa. and had moved to York Co. Pa. with their father before 1749. John Shirk's first 2 daughters (Barbara & Mary) were already married to sons of Frederick Leathers II, when he died, so it is natural that other Leathers family took in the young sons.
    His son Joseph Shirk later married a daughter of Frederick Leathers II.

    York County, Pa. Orphans Court, July 19, 1784:
    "Joseph Leathers was appointed guardian of Joseph Sherrick age 19;
    Andrew Hershey for John Sherrick, age 17;
    John Hare for Jacob Sherrick, age 11; (Jacob S. later chose Jacob Leathers);
    Frederick Leathers II for David Sherrik, age 9;
    Frederick Leathers & Christian Bechtel, executors of estate."
