While the 1880 census return indicates that John's father was born in Germany, the information received by Jesse Montgomery Seaver in about 1920 indicated that John was the son of Barney Seaver, born in New York. Both are secondary information from suspect sources.

Barney Seaver had four wives, and children named John, Laura, Carlton, Mary, Nelson, Charles. They resided in Barre township of Orleans County in 1850 and 1860.
