    LIEUT. JAMES S. SCOTT was born August 31, 1822, in Montgomery County, Tenn., and is the eldest of the seven sons and four daughters born to John and Margaret (McCarell) Scott.

    John Scott was born in Faquier County, Va., in 1796, and when a lad of six years was brought to Mercer County, Ky. In 1814 he moved to Barren County, Ky., and later to Tennessee, where he married. In 1822 he returned to Barren County, where he engaged in farming until his death, in 1876. His parents, Francis and Margaret (Smith) Scott, were both natives of Fauquier County, Va. He immigrated with his family to Mercer County, Ky; thence to Barren County, where he died in 1838.
