He married Isabella Smith on 16 November 1756 in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware, British Colonial America. John was a private in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted 25 January 1776 in Chester County, 4th Penn Battalion under Capt. Taylor and Col. Wayne. In 1777, he served as a private in Capt. John Ramsey's company, Chester County, Pennsylvania militia.
