    While residing in Newberry County, SC, John Ross was drafted as a light horseman during 1779 under Capt. Middleton and Col. Lyles. During the spring of 1780 he was drafted under Capt. Jones and Col. Lindsay and was marched to Georgia. After returning home he was captured by Tories and held about three weeks. During the summer of 1780 he volunteered under Capt. Jones, Col. Lindsay, and Gen. Sumter and was in the battle at Ramsour's Mill. His unit joined Col. Shelby and was at Kings Mountain. Ross was allowed pension on his application executed 13 August 1832 while residing in Madison County, Kentucky. FPA S31336; AA 6614; X2627; PI.

    JOHN ROSS b. 7 July 1761 Brunswick Co Va. d.10 Oct 1844 Madison Co Ky. lived in Newberry Co S.C. before 1778. 1778 he joined Col. Lysle and Capt Middletown, the light horseman brigade. 1780 he served with Gen. Sumpter, Col. Lindsey, Capt. Jones. He was at Camden, Catawba, Sawyers Mill, Kings Mountain. John became sick while at Eutaw Springs and remained ill for several months, until Cornwallis surrendered. John Ross served for a total time of 18 months. He moved to Greenville S.C. after his service, and eventually on to Madison Co Kentucky. He filed for & received a pension of $60.00 a year as of 4 March 1831. FPA S31336; AA 6614; X2627; PI.
