[edit] From the Genealogy of I. Clifford RollSource: "The Abraham Roll Family from New Jersey Pioneers in Hamilton County, Ohio" by I. Clifford Roll with Marie Dickore. Cincirmati Hist Soc Bulletin Vol 18, No 4, 1960. p. 288. In his will he spells his name Rool. Came from Holland and settled between Springfield and Westfield, NJ, on the side of the first mountain about one mile from Springfield on the Old Stage Route from Elizabethtown to Turkey (now New Providence) in the late 1600's or early 1700's A.D. p. 287. "...Jan's children changed the name to Roll after the defeat of the Dutch by the English in 1664. Dutch Mangel to English Roll. But data received from Holland recently states definitely that there was a Roll family in Hoorn and one in Purmerend, both in North Holland. They also state that Mangle (Mangele) was an old Christian name in Holland. Jan Mange1se (Mangelsz, Mangelsen). Each of the three means 'son of Mangel'. Jan Mangelse (Roll) entered this country as Jan Mangelse, and that his children did not change the name, but simply restored the family name." p. 293. "Sergeant in the American Revolution, was about 70 years of age when the war broke out, he evidently drilled the citizens who became minute men. Had a son, Isaac, who served in the war and three of John's grandsons, John, Abraham and Mathias, were also in the New Jersey Troops." The rest of the will follows: In the name of God Amen the thirteenth day of March in the third year ofhis Majesties reign George the Third, by the grace of God King defender of the faith and dom one thousand seven hundred sixty and three. I, John Roll of the borough of Elizabeth county of Essex and province of East New Jersey yeoman being very sick and weak of body but of perfect mind and memory thank be given to almighty God therefor and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say principally no first of all I surrender and committ my soul into the hands of God that gave it and as for my body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a Christian like decent manner at the discretion of my executors hereafter named nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same by the mighty power of God and touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased Almighty God to bless me with in this life I give and devise and dispose of the same in the following manner. First my will is that all my just and lawfull debts and funeral charges be paid out of my moveable estate. Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved wife Elizabeth the use and possession of one equal third part of all my lands and tenements during her natural life and I give unto my said wife all my moveable estate excepting such debts and legacies as is herein mentioned. Item. I give and bequeath unto my loving son John Rool the sum often pounds current money at 8/P OZ. Item. I give and bequeath unto my loving daughter Jan Cooly (sic) the sum of five pounds, Item. I give and bequeath unto my loving dafter (sic) Catron Parsel the sum of twenty shillings. Item. I give and bequeath unto my loving dafter (sic) Mary Wooley the sum of twenty shillings. Item. I give and bequeath unto my loving son Isaac Rool the sum of twenty shillings together with all those several sums which each of my said childrens (sic) has received from me. Item. I give and bequeath unto my loving son Abraham Rool and to his heirs and assigns all and singular my lands and tenements as may and will more fully appear by those several deeds of sale which I have for my lands recourse thereto being had. And I do hereby make and ordain well beloved wife Elizabeth Executrix and my loving son John Rool Executor of this my last will and testament and I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disannul all and every other former will and testament in witness whereof! have hereunto set my hand and seal the day month and year first above written. his John (X) Roll. (LS) mark Signed sealed published pronounced and declared to be the last will and testament of him the testator in presence of, James Osburn Keziah Denman John Stites Sworn at Turky (sic) 12th 1782 befor Robt Ogden Jrnr. Surr. The foregoing will being proved probate was granted by his excellency William Livingston Esqr. unto John Roll one of the executors in the within will named being first duly sworn well and truly to perform the same exhibit a true inventory and render ajust and true account when thereto lawfully required given under the perogative seal the date above said.
