John Ritchie, Sr., son of James Crockett Ritchie and Mary (Keith) Ritchie, married Nancy (Hutchinson) Ritchie, daugther of Peter Hutchinson and Nancy Jane (Green) Hutchinson, in 1804.
They had the following children: James, Rachel, Sarah "Sallie", Nancy, Naomi "Omie", and John Jr.
The Ritchie family moved from Virginia to Buncombe County, North Carolina where they are found on the 1800 Buncombe County census. After a while, they moved to Russell County, Virginia. Sometime between 1831-1832 they moved from Scott County, Virginia back to Russell County, Virginia. This is the part of Russell County that is now Wise County, Virginia. They show up on the 1840 land tax list for Russell County, Virginia. By 1860, Nancy, at age 81 was living with her daughter Nancy who had married Jeremiah Powers.
