'This Nicholas ... was the son of John Putnam of Rowsham and Wingrave, who in his will dated 19 Sept. 1573, proved 14 Nov. 1573, names his sons Nicholas, Richard, and Thomas.'

The author goes on to present evidence that this John inherited property in Slapton from his father Richard (which John passed on to his own son John before his death).
