"Francis Asbury Pugh, my grandfather was born April 20, 1820, in Christian County, Kentucky,
about 12 miles from Hopkinsville the county seat, and between that town and Elktown [Elkton]
the county seat of Todd County. This is in the southwestern part of the state [KY], not too far from the Tennessee line, and east of the Cumberland River. Francis Asbury was the son of John Pugh [Jr.] and Mary ? Donovan II may be mistaken as to the christian name of the mother). The children of John Pugh, in Linn County Oregon, should be able to give the correct name. Mary Donovan was born October 1st 1791 in Rockingham County, Virginia the daughter of William ? Donovan, an officer in the Revolutionary War. (the first name is give from memory and may not be correct), I have no data as to the name of Mary Donovan's mother."
"John Pugh [Jr.], and Mary Donovan were married according to an obituary notice in the family bible 'About 1818.' I believe there were but two children born to this union J. Washington Pugh and Francis Asbury Pugh. It is my recollection of the family tradition that William Donovan served in General Washington's Army, and this might account for the first son of Mary Pugh being named Washington. Francis Asbury Pugh was named for the great Methodist preacher, and appointed by John Wesley the first bishop of the Methodist Church in America. The Pughs were Methodist and probably had met Bishop Asbury, as he traveled extensively through the frontier settlement."
