Revolutionary War Pension Information
Information from “Virginia/West Virginia Genealogical Data from Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Records”, Vol. 4, compiled by Patrick G. Wardell, Lt. Col. U.S. Army Ret. :
- Pettis, John - born 1754 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia; entered service 1779 Caroline County, Virginia in Virginia regiment; received Pension there in 1832; Henry Willoughby made affidavit then in Sp[otsylvania County, Virginia per that County Clerk of Court Richard Stevenson; soldier died Caroline County, 7/1/1833; married Spring 1782 to Martha/Patsy Reynolds, Port Royal, Virginia; widow received Pension 1841 in Orange County, Virginia, per County Justice of the Peace Richard Richards & County Clerk of Court Reynolds Chapman; soldier's sister Catharine Pettis made affidavit then Caroline County, Virginia she was present at soldier's wedding; per that County Court Clerk John S. Pendleton,; Jane Frawner made affidavit there then soldier & wife had earlier resided with Jane's father that County per County Justice of the Peace M.H. Jones; soldier's son Spencer (b. abt. 1791) was killed in duel before 1841, he having been at one time a U.S. Congressman from Missouri; Ellen Porter made affidavit in 1842 Caroline County, Virginia, she abt. age 16 when she knew soldier & wife; widow resided age 90 Orange County, Virginia, when that County Clerk of Court Philip S. Fry. F-W3449, R1920.
