Information on John Patton

John Patton, son of Matthew Patton, the Martyr, was imprisoned in Glasgow, Scotland for: (1) Attending "Meetings of baptisings in the fields (they dared not hold services indoors, for walls have ears), (2) even tho they attended church regularly, their wives went elsewhere. Jails were overflowing and cruelty unspeakable. Lord Cardross was influential in obtaining permission to transport some of the inmates to South Carolina to work improving the land granted by the King to Lord Cardross and his associates. On May 22, 1684 the Privy Council allowed 22 men to depart from Tarbooth Prison, among them John Patton. They were to work ten years to pay for their transportation and earn their freedom. Few of them returned to Scotland from the Cardross Colony of 1684, but John Patton was among the fortunate ones. He and his wife Susanna (probably the same as listed in his will, written in 1767), came to America, settling in Cumberland County, Penn.
Six sons are shown of record: James, Joseph, Benjamin, William, John, and Matthew "Old Matt". Alexander and Tristram who are later found in Cumberland and Dauphin Counties may also have been his sons.
