  8. The Central Bond Forgeries, in The New York Times. (New York, New York)
    8, 17 Jun 1874.

... Robert Murray testified that he was a Deputy United States Marshall from 1861 to 1869, and that he arrested Olmstead, the engraver, on a charge of counterfeiting in connection with Nelse Stewart. The arrest was made in February, 1867, and Stewart was convicted in Brooklyn. On that occasion Olmstead was kept in custody for seven weeks. ...
... Davis stated that he was a professional burglar, and knew Olmstead for years. For three years, Olmstead was in the habit of hardening burglar's tools for him, and charged him at the rate of $2 for tempering a "drill." Mr. Purdy offered to show by the witness that Olmstead concocted a burglary which Davis carried out. He also offered to prove that Olmstead shared in the proceeds of the burglary. The evidence was offered to controvert the testimony of Olmstead, who said he never did any business except legitimate business. ...

  9.   CHARGE OF FRAUDULENT NATURALIZATION, in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States. Brooklyn Daily Eagle. (Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States)
    6 Nov 1868.

    COMMISSIONER'S COURT - COM. JONES
    CHARGE OF FRAUDULENT NATURALIZATION
Yesterday afternoon a man named John Olmstead, doing business as a saddler at Port Richmond, S.I., was brought before Commissioner Jones, on a charge of having issued fraudulent naturalization papers. The warrant upon which he was arrested charges that he did falsely make and forge and cause and procure to be falsely made and forged, certain certificates or evidences of citizenship by which it was made to appear that Michal Horan, Patrick Horan and Thomas Prendelle, had been admitted to citizenship. Mr. Olmstead waived examination and was held to await the action of the Grand Jury giving bail to the amount of a $1,000 for his appearance. The complainant in the case is one Erasmus Sterling, also a resident of Staten Island, who sets forth in his affidavit that three men named above received three papers without ever having gone into any court.

  10. Death Notice, in Daily Times (New Brunswick, New Jersey)
    8, 12 Jul 1897.

JOHN OLMSTEAD DEAD- Well Known Here In Connection With the Rubber Business.
John A. Olmstead, who is well known in this city and throughout the United States generally, from his connection with the rubber business, died in his 71st year, at Graniteville, S. I., yesterday. He was an engraver and patternmaker, his chief business being the engraving upon the rolls of the stamp which marks the name of the maker upon the bottom of the shoe. An interesting fact in the life of Mr. Olmstead is that, he was hired several years ago by several men whom he thought to be secret service officials. But instead they were a gang of counterfeiters, who proved to be very dangerous because of the skillful workmanship of Mr. Olmstead. The gang was caught and Mr. Olmstead had to stay in jail several days before his innocence could be established. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at l1 o'clock from his late residence on Kruzer avenue, in Graniteville, S. I.
