    John Nutter
    BIRTH 1765
    Sussex County, Delaware, USA
    DEATH 1808 (aged 42–43)
    Harrison County, West Virginia, USA

This John Nutter was the third child of Capt. Thomas Nutter and Sarah Goodwin Nutter.

He was born in Dec. 1765 in the colony of DE, in what is now Sussex Co, DE. However, what today is Sussex Co, DE was Dorchester Co, MD, prior to 1767.

In 1769 this John Nutter moved with his parents from the colony of DE (today Sussex Co, DE) to what is now Fayette Co, PA. Then in 1772 the family moved again, to the future site of Nutter Fort in the colony of VA, which is now in Clarksburg, WV.

This John Nutter and his parents were among the co-founders and builders of Nutter Fort.

Nutter Fort was built on land located in the colony of VA, before the USA became a nation. Then after the USA became a nation, this land was in Harrison Co, VA. After VA sub-divided into the two states of VA and WV, this land was in WV. Today this land is in what is now Clarksburg, WV.

Nutter Fort has been torn down, and today Nutter Fort High School is at the location of the previous Nutter Fort. There is a plaque on a stone on this site, to commemorate that it is the location of the former Nutter Fort.

This John Nutter married Elizabeth Cottrell on Oct. 2, 1786 in Harrison Co., VA.

They had the following children, listed in birth order: Nancy, Andrew (b. 1791 in Harrison Co.), Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Julia Ann, John C.

His will was either written or probated on Feb. 22, 1808, and it documented that he owned 200 acres of land in Ohio.

His burial location is unknown to this researcher, and is presumed to be in Harrison Co, VA (now WV).

His son Andrew Nutter Sr, (b.1791) was an early pioneer of the Oxford community in what is now Doddridge Co, WV (previously in the colony of VA, then the state of VA, then the state of WV).
