Facts and Events
From: The Orillia Packet; 4 June, 1914: "Gravenhurst Banner: - On Wednesday a stranger, J. H. Newman of Uptergrove, blew into town and forthwith proceeded to procure himself a wife. He called in at several homes and made enquiries and stated that a widow, old maid (of coursed there are none in Gravenhurst) or a young lady would be equally acceptable. He, however, went into several homes without the formality of knocking and wound up in the lock-up. He threatened the town with damages in the amount of $10,000, but in the morning the damage was reduced to a 75-cent bottle of poor whisky. His friends at Uptergrove were notified and they took him home on Friday." References
