John was born 29 Jul 1833 (from memorial inscription) in Stratford St Anthony, Wiltshire (from census data). He is one of four children of Stephen Munday and Jane Yeats. Stratford St Anthony is now known as Stratford Tony or Stratford Toney. He was baptised in the Stratford St Anthony parish 25 Aug 1833 (citation needed). The parish church is called the Church of St Mary & St Lawrence.

John Munday is recorded in the 1841 Census age 7 with his parents Stephen and Jane Munday and his siblings Sophia, William and Henry together in a house in Stratford St Anthony parish. The entire family are recorded as being 'born of this county' i.e. Wiltshire. The Munday surname spelling variation occurs frequently throughout his records.

On the next census night 30 Mar 1851, John, 17, is still at home in the village of Stratford Toney with both parents and 2 younger brothers. All four males in the household are occupied as 'Ag Labs' (agricultural labourers). John's birthplace is given as Stratford Toney.

John is married on 29 Aug 1852 to a heavily pregnant Sarah Jane Williams in the Bishopstone parish which is very near Stratford Tony. The Bishopstone church is known as St John the Baptist. Both bride and groom are recorded as being from Bishopstone parish and 'of age', although John is only 19 and Sarah is 20. John's occupation is given as labourer, as is his father Stephen. Sarah's father is named as Thomas, and is also a labourer. The witnesses are Charles Burroughs and Sophia Munday (presumably John's sister), and the officiating minister is the priest W.K. Hamilton. Sarah had an illegitimate daughter in 1850 to an unknown father.

John and Sarah's first child Henry is born 11 Oct 1852 and is immediately baptised. The baby only survives two days and is buried 15 Oct 1852. Both of these events (baptism and burial) are recorded in the Bishopstone parish records, and the abode is given as Throope which is one of the six hamlets that make up the Bishopstone parish. The officiating minister on both occasions is Francis Lear.

The next child born to John and Sarah is William George Mundy in Stratford Toney (from census data) in 1854 (from FreeBMD index). A great grandson of W.G, Mundy, Mr. Robert Faille has given us his actual birth-date as 9 Feb 1854. Eliza Mary Mundy is born in the 2nd quarter of 1857 (FreeBMD index) in Stratford Toney (census data)and George William Mundy is born 15 Jan (citation needed) 1860 (FreeBMD index) also in Stratford Toney (census data).

The family then moved to the tything of East Harnham in the parish of Britford (now an affluent suburb of Salisbury, Wiltshire). The 1861 census records John and Sarah Munday in a house with children William G., Eliza M. and George W. Also at this address is John's unmarried brother William Munday, a 'Gentleman's Gardener' and a lodger Thomas Goodfellow, 18, unmarried, Gardener and Domestic Servant. John's occupation remains an 'Ag Lab'.

The next four children of John and Sarah are: James Henry Mundy born 31 Dec 1862 (copy of birth certificate cited), Henry James Mundy born 4th qtr 1864 (FreeBMD index), Mary Jane Mundy born 2nd qtr 1867 (FreeBMD index) and Albert Edwin Mundy born 2nd qtr 1869 (FreeBMD index). All of these children are born in East Harnham (census data).

John's mother Jane (Yeats) Munday dies in 1867.

The 1871 census continues to record the Mundy family in East Harnham. In this household are John and Sarah with the children William, George, James, Henry, Mary and Albert. Also rejoining the family is Jane, Sarah's illegitimate daughter who had been living with her maternal grandparents. The daughter missing from this household is Eliza, and she can be found working as a servant for the Wilmont family in St Martin, Wiltshire. Another resident of the house is Henry Mundy, John's brother. John's occupation is now a General Gardener.

The last of John and Sarah's children are Edwin Albert Mundy born 2nd qtr 1872 (FreeBMD) and Sidney John Mundy born 4th qtr 1873 (FreeBMD).

In Feb 1877, John Mundy was dismissed by his employer Sir Thomas Parkyns over a dispute about his right to vote in the Wilton election. As a result of his dismissal, he was also evicted from his home. It is not yet clear if Parkyns was also his landlord. These events are reported in newspapers across England after several people came to his defence. Mr. A. Smee sent a letter to the editor of the London Daily News (published 3 Mar 1877) along with copies of the letters Parkyns had sent to Mundy. Smee describes John as 'a highly respectable, sober and industrious man'. In a paragraph devoted to the matter in the Daily News 12 Mar 1877, Mundy is described as 'a man of more than ordinary intelligence, for during the time that he was an agricultural labourer he taught himself gardening, and was employed as a gardener in his last situation." Mundy was known to Mr. Fawcett M.P. whose father had employed John several years previously. The Daily News reports that 'Mundy has always borne such a high character that Mr. Fawcett, feeling that the man had been very badly treated, interested himself on his behalf, and through the kindness of several members of the House of Commons and other friends has been able to forward Mundy a sum which will afford him some compensation for having been suddenly, with a wife and seven children, turned out of his home."

John's father Stephen Munday dies in 1880.

In the 1881 Census, John and Sarah are living at 4 Greencroft (Road?) in the St Edmund Parish of New Sarum (Salisbury) with their children James H. 18, Mary J. 14, Albert E. 11, Edwin A. 9 and Sidney J. 7. John's occupation is Gardener, as is his son James. Mary is a Domestic Servant, and the remaining children are Scholars.

In 1888, daughter Mary Jane Mundy dies of typhoid fever one week after giving birth to her illegitimate daughter Mary Beatrice Mundy. Mary B. is raised by John and Sarah.

On the night of the 1891 census, John Mundy, Gardener/Domestic Servant is a patient of the Herbert Convalescent Home, Westbourne, Dorset which was a hospital built in 1867 connected with Florence Nightingale. His wife Sarah can be found at the family home which is now at 104 Brown St in the St Thomas parish of Salisbury. Their son Edwin A., Carman(?) is still at home, as well as Granddaughter Mary B. Also boarding at the house is Henry H. Mundy, 14, errand boy. This person may actually be grandson Henry Herbert Whitlock.

John and Sarah's son William George Mundy dies in Coquimbo, Chile 1893 aged 39.

By the 1901 census, John and Sarah continue living in Brown St, this time in no. 88. Edwin Albert and his wife Mary Jane share the house along with Mary Beatrice their granddaughter. John, 68, is still a gardener ('jobbing' - casual or occasional work), but of his 'own account' and Edwin is now also a gardener also 'jobbing'. There is also a lodger at the house - Charles Norkin, 30, general labourer.

John Mundy passed away 24 May 1902 in Salisbury and was buried at the London Road Cemetery in Salisbury. A death notice was placed in the Sydney Morning Herald 8 Jul 1902 presumably by his son James Henry Mundy who had emigrated to Australia in 1883.
