Tombstone says "This/ Monument is dedicated/ to the Memory of/ JOHN MONTGOMERY ESQR./ who departed this life Septr. 10th/ 1805, Aged Fifty two years./ As a token of their great regard/ a tender and disconfolate wife/ and an only Son have caused/ this ftone to be erected/ to him memory./ Likewife at his feet/ lies his three fmall Children./ Would bounteous heav'n indulge my/ Prayer/ I'd frame a nobler choice/ Nor living wifh the pompous pile/ Nor dead regret the lofs/ In thy fair book of life divine/ My God infcribe my name/ There let it fill fome humble place/ Beneath the flaughterd Lamb./ [on back of footstone:]

1. Property, 14 Apr 1787, Lancaster County, Camden District, South Carolina, United States. 3634 Deed from John Montgomery and Martha, planter, to James Montgomery, planter, 100 acres on Cain Creek. Granted to John Montgomery by his Excellency Lord Charles G Montague, Captain General Governor of SC on 24 Dec 1772, surveyed to Alexander Nisbet 12 Nov 1770. Witnessed by William and Alexander Montgomery (Lancaster Co Deed Book A).
2. Property, 18 Jul 1793, Lancaster County, Camden District, South Carolina, United States. 3634 Deed from James, Robert, John, Hugh Montgomery, planters, and their wives and John Kirk to Jonathan Mackey, sadler, 200 acres, granted to Thomas Campbell 2 Oct 1767 and transferred to Hugh Montgomery and bequeathed to his sons James, Robert, John, and Hugh and John Kirk (Lancaster Co Deed Book B, p251).
3. Story. 90 John Montgomery was son of Hugh, was born in 1753 and died 9/10/1805, was buried in the Presbyterian Churchyard of the old Waxhaw Church. He married Martha Cousar (b 1751, d 7/3/1834, cemetery says "aged 83"). They had three children who died in infancy. The only surviving son of whom we have records is Colonel John Montgomery. Cemetery record says "died Sept 10 1805 aged 52 years, left wife and only son, at his foot lie three small children."
4. Story. 3644 John Montgomery, a son of Hugh, was born either in the latter four months of 1752 or the first eight months of 1753. He was the only one of the ten children of Hugh that remained in South Carolina. He died 9-10-1805 and is buried in the Presbyterian Churchyard of the old Waxhaw Church. In 1772 he married Martha Cousar, born in 1751, died 7-3-1834. Three children died in infancy. The only surviving child of whom we have record is a son, Colonel John Montgomery.
