- successful cotton and rice planter on his family's plantation land in SC
- supposedly a revolutionary soldier, but proof is needed
- 1790 - married Sarah Watts, the ward of his uncle, thereby gaining ownership to her father's property on Daufuskie Island
- John and Sarah adopted a daughter, Mary Ann Naylor
- 1797 - bought an empty lot on Warren St. in Savannah for $700, built a house on it, left the plantation in charge of an overseer, and moved his family to Savannah
- 1804 - a hurricane devastates the Savannah area and the Mongin's Savannah home was sold for $6000 to Edward Swarbreck
- John and Sarah are thought to have moved to their Daufuskie Island plantation
- 1816 - wife Sarah dies
- 1820 - John began purchasing Savannah wharf lots and suffering heavy property losses in the fires that plagued the city
- 1823 - son David died
- 1832 - married Ann Harrison ; no known issue
- John willed the majority of his estate to the 2 surviving children of his son David
