Military People of Whitley County by Jeanette Brown

There are a number of sources of information pertaining to military people in Whitley County. This is an effort to combine all these sources into one location. The cemeteries are a major contributor of information. With patience, the Adjutant General's report can be invaluable, as are the lists prepared by the GAR and American Legion. Whitley County has had a somewhat unique source in that for several years during Old Settlers Day veterans would register. This would supply such information as birthdays, muster dates, place of residence, regiment, etc. So that you can know just where the information comes from, the following code is used:

1. Cemetery records

2. GAR or American Legion cemetery flag lists

3. 1865 Adjutant General's report

4. Joseph R Harrison papers in his attempt to keep track of the 160th Reg

5. A few are taken from the 1907 Kaler-Maring History of Whitley Co.

6. Old Settler's registrations

7. 1890 roster of military burial

8. Roster of the survivals of the 129th

9. Membership roster of the George B Stough GAR Post

A. Obituary Record published at Columbia City 1858-1910 by Nellie Raber If there is no code, the name has been found ONLY in American Legion records.

Note: Where a birth date is bracketed - {1865} the date is calculated from their age given when they registered for Old Settlers.

Unless specifically stated that the name on the tombstone is a spouse, any names on the stone will be in ( ).

This is not a complete list, especially missing are those of later wars. Any additions will be appreciated.
