source: Merriman Family Reunion 7/10/1897 written by Dr Elijah Merriman " John Merriman the eldest son of William the second, married Mary Stitt. They became parents of twelve children, eleven of whom lived to adult age.

John Merriman the father of the above described family was a commissioned officer in the army of 1812, he did duty at lower Sandusky, in guarding the building of a boat for Commodore Perry, to be used in conveying the U.S. Army across the lake to Canada. He was at the battle of the Thames.On his way home he bought a large family Bible, for which he paid twelve dollars. That Bible is still kept in the family, and is very highly prized.
