John McLaughlin was a crooked attorney in Gallatin County, Illinois that became well known for absconding with funds from the estates of others and then disappearing, including the estate of Brice Hannah, who died in 1823 in Gallatin County, Illinois.

Court Records in Gallatin County, Illinois:

Aug. 20, 1816: Ordered that road from Joseph Owens at U.S. Saline to Boon's mill be cut out 16 ft. wide, and intersect Shawanoetown to Boon's mill road. Stephen Boutwell shall be supervisor from Saline to John McLaughlin's and Joseph Clark from McLaughlin's to Brice Hannah's.

    HON. DOLPHES BRICE HANNAH.—This gentleman is the son of Brice and Celia Tade Hannah, and was born in Gallatin county, Illinois, October 11, 1822. His father, who was a substantial business man engaged in trade and forwarding, died in the spring of 1823, leaving a wife and two children, one boy and one girl. He left considerable estate, consisting of personal property. John McLaughlin and the widow were appointed to administer the estate; and, as usual, McLaughlin did the work, pocketed the entire proceeds of the estate, and then left for parts unknown.
