- Some records of this John McKinney are contained in the Revolutionary War Pension File of John McKinney, who appears to be the son of this John McKinney, as follows:
- query letter in file in 1939 from Mrs. William J. Johnson of Campobello, South Carolina, states a John McKinney (born abt. 1735 in Virginia) married Elizabeth McDowell, & their daughter Jane was born 9/11/1779 in Chester County (area then Craven County), South Carolina, & they moved to Jessamine County, Kentucky, before 1802, where John died abt. 1811, their two sons-in-law Ray Moss & John G. Brown.
