[NOTE: I have seen in several places online the claim that John McKim was born in New Madrid, Missouri, but I have yet to see a citation to any kind of reliable source. The settlement was established in 1788 as a trading post and for its first couple of decades there were never more than perhaps 100 residents in the neighborhood. There are no "McKim" listings in the 1796 census and the name is not mentioned in the Goodspeed history (which lists most of the earliest settlers). Also, going out to Missouri and then back to Indiana is a very atypical, retrograde migration pattern at this very early period. I suspect this assertion originated with World Family Tree on Ancestry, so I'm not accepting this claim until I see some documentation. --Mike (mksmith) 09:51, 30 August 2009 (EDT)]
