John Joseph McGough and Rosanna Mooney

John Joseph McGough was born in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada on June 2, 185 0, and died in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on July 31, 1925. He came to the Unit ed States from Ontario in 1866 or 1867, according to the 1900 Wisconsin fe deral census. His naturalization papers, filed in Eau Claire County, Wisco nsin, on April 3, 1871, say he was born in Canada in 1849 and entered t he US at Detroit in August, 1866. His declaration of intent to become a ci tizen was signed John J. Mcgeough, but the indexes and other documents a ll say McGough. The censuses say his parents were born in Ireland. The 19 00 federal census shows his month of birth as June, 1850, and his ag e, on June 4, 1900, as 49.

The 1880 Wisconsin federal census shows that John McGough, age 30, was a f armer in the town of Union, Eau Claire County; that he was born in Canad a; and that his father and mother were born in Ireland. The census shows t hat John was married to Rosanna (1850–September 30, 1884), age 30, that s he was born in Wisconsin, and that her parents were born in Ireland. Sin ce their oldest child was born in 1873, John and Rosanna were married in a bout 1872. The 1880 federal census shows that Mary Mooney, age 70, mother- in-law of John J. McGough, was living with John J. and Rosanna Mooney McGo ugh. Here is an electronic transcript of information in the 1980 census re turn of Eau Claire:

John McGough, age 30, born in Canada, farmer, father and mother born in Ir eland; Rosanna McGough, wife, age 30, born in Wisconsin, keeping house, fa ther and mother born in Ireland; John E. McGough, son, age 7, born in Wisc onsin; Hugh F. McGough, age 5, born in Wisconsin; Rosemary McGough, daught er, age, born in Wisconsin; Elizabeth McGough, daughter, age 1, born in Wi sconsin; Mary Mooney, mother-in-law, age 70, born in Ireland, father and m other born in Ireland.

Living next door to the family of John and Rosanna McGough at the ti me of the 1880 census were Daniel and Ann McManus. Te maiden name of Ann M cManus was McGough. She was almost certainly the daughter of Andrew and El izabeth McGough of St. Clair township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.

Rosanna Mooney was probably the daughter of Hugh and Mary Mooney. The 18 60 federal census of Wisconsin, Eau Claire County, Half Moon township (pa ge 142) lists this family: Hugh Mooney, age 52, a farmer with land worth $ 5200 and personal property worth $300, born in Ireland; Margaret A. Moone y, age 52, born in Ireland (who later appears as Mary); William T. Moone y, age 20, a farm laborer, born in Pennsylvania; James, age 17, a farm lab orer born in Pennsylvania, and Rosanna, age 11, born in Wisconsin. This Ro sanna married John Joseph McGough about 1872. About ten years earlie r, in 1863, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Rosanna's older brother, Willi am T. Mooney, probably had married Rosannah Fitzpatrick, the sist er of my great-grandmother, Catharine Fitzpatrick McGough. See McGoughs a nd McGues in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 1856–1906.

At the time of the 1900 federal census, this John McGough family was renti ng a house at 625 Union Street. John is listed as a stonemason who had bee n, unemployed for two out of the last twelve months. The Eau Claire City D irectory, 1893–94, lists John J. McGough, a mason, residing at 625 Union.

Children of John Joseph McGough and Rosanna Mooney were:

John Edward McGough (April 20,1873–April 3, 1915) is shown as 7 years o ld in the 1880 federal census. John’s mother died on September 30, 1884. H is father remarried in a Catholic ceremony on May 21, 1890, and possib ly in an earlier civil ceremony on October 6, 1889. John, his younger brot her Hugh, and three younger sisters, Mary, Elizabeth and Anna, were not li ving with their father and stepmother at the time of the federal cens us of 1900. The Eau Claire City Directory, 1893–94 shows a John McGough, b lacksmith for A. J. Bostwick, as a border at 202 Kelsey in Eau Claire. T he interment records of St. Patrick's Church show that a John McGough, bo rn in Wisconsin, died in Eau Claire of tuberculosis, at the age of 4 1, on April 3, 1915.

Hugh Francis McGough (August 3, 1874–December 23, 1898) is shown as 5 yea rs old by the 1880 federal census. The Eau Claire City Directory, 1893– 94 shows a Hugh McGough, a clerk at A. Frederickson, as residing at 625 Un ion, along with John J. McGough, a mason and, I assume, his stepmother. Hu gh died in Drummond, Bayfield County, Wisconsin, on December 23, 1898. T he probate of his estate shows that he was survived by his father John J ., and by his siblings John E., Lizzie, and Mary. Neither his mother nor h is sister Anna are named as survivors..

Mary McGough (or Rose Mary) (September 12, 1876–July 29, 1941) is sho wn as 3 years old by the 1880 federal census. The 1900 federal census sho ws Mary, age 23, as the head of a household in a rented house in Eau Clai re with her sisters Lizzie, age 21, and Anna, age 19. Mary was list ed as a dressmaker who had been unemployed for nine of the last twelve mon ths. Her sisters Lizzie and Anna were both shown as day laborers who had b een unemployed for six of the last twelve months. The three sisters resid ed in the same home with the family of Michael and Margan Meagher. The 19 05 state census shows Mary, Lizzie, and Anna back at the home of their fat her. Mary is there listed as a dressmaker with no unemployment during t he past twelve months.

Elizabeth H. McGough (Lizzie) (October 1, 1878–) is shown as 1 year o ld by the 1880 federal census. She married Patrick Gaffney in Eau Clai re on November 12, 1906, according to Brides of Eau Claire Co., Wis., 1854 –1929 (Genealogical Research Society of Eau Claire, 1995). They had two so ns, James Hugh Gaffney (September 2, 1907–September 10, 1984) and Charl es T. Gaffney (May 11, 1909–July, 1974).

Anna McGough (August, 1880–1899). In 1899, there is a record of a guardian ship of Anna McGough, age 19, daughter of John J. and Rosanna McGough. T he record notes that the mother, Rosanna, had died on September 30, 188 4. The 1905 state census shows here name as Annie and that she was ba ck in the home of her father. Her occupation is shown as dressmaker wi th no unemployment during the past twelve months. Anna married John McMah on on June 20, 1905. The marriage is shown in the Wisconsin Pre-1907 Marri age Index. They had two children, Catherine and Lucille McMahon.

Daniel McGough (1882–1883) is buried with Rosanna McGough, whose life sp an is shown as 1850–1884, in St. Patrick’s Cem. in Eau Claire. Since th ey are buried under a common monument, I assume that Daniel was a son of J ohn J. and Rosanna Mooney McGough who died as an infant.

Rosanna Mooney McGough, the mother of the six children just listed, di ed on September 30, 1884, and is buried at St. Patrick’s Cem. in Eau Clair e, where her life span shown as 1850–1884. A document signed by John J. Mc Gough on October 5, 1889, and filed in the probate of the estate of Rosan na McGough, shows her heirs as John (16), Hugh Francis (14), Rose Mary (12 ), Elizabeth H. (12) and Anna (8).

John Joseph McGough and Rosanna Ferrigan A marriage of a John McGue is shown in Eau Claire on October 6, 1889, by t he Wisconsin Pre-1907 Marriage Index. This is on the day following the fil ing of probate documents by John J. McGough in the estate of his first wif e, Rosanna Mooney McGough, who had been dead for five years. This was prob ably a civil ceremony.

In what I assume to be a Catholic ceremony repeating the earlier civil cer emony, John McGough, a laborer born in Ontario, Canada, was married to Ros anna Ferrigan (May, 1860–August 2, 1929) in a Catholic ceremony in Eau Cla ire on May 21, 1890. John McGough’s parents are listed as Michael and Ro sa McGough, certainly the Michael McGough and Roseanna Halton of Lindsa y, Ontario, discussed above. Rosanna’s is described as born in Eau Clai re to William Ferrigan and Bridget McCormick. The Wisconsin Pre-1907 Marri age Index shows the marriage of John McGough on May 21, 1890.

In the 1900 federal census, John McGough is shown as living with his wif e, Rosanne, in a rented house in the City of Eau Claire. John's birth da te is given as June, 1850, and his age is shown as 49. His year of immigra tion to the United States is given as 1867 and the number of years in t he United States as 32. In a column under the heading "Naturalizatio n" is the entry "Pa." His occupation is listed as "Stone Mason." Rosanne 's birth date is given as May, 1860, her age as 40, and her birth pla ce as Wisconsin. Her parents' birth places are listed as Ireland. The "num ber of years married" is listed as 10 for both John and Rosanne. Rosan ne is listed as the mother of four children, all living. The 4 was writt en on top of and replaced an underlying 6. Both John and Rosanne are list ed as being able to read, write and speak English. Only three children, ho wever, are shown as living in the household. The names in the census repo rt are the names that I show in parenthesis below: Katie, Lottie, and Le o. All surnames are spelled McGough.

Catherine (Katie) McGough, born in February, 1891, died June 23, 191 2, in Minnesota. Shown as age 9 in the 1900 census.

Charlotte Mary (Lottie) McGough, born in December 11, 1895. Shown as a ge 4 in the 1900 census. Married Otto Robert Biegel on November 24, 1921 a nd had several children. Died on July 09, 1935 in Boyd, Wisconsin.

Michael (Leo) McGough, born May 5, 1898. Shown as age 2 in the 1900 censu s. Married Osa Everson on July 17, 1941. Died on February 25, 1967, in E au Claire. Michael L. McGough, was born in Eau Claire on May 5, 1898, a nd died there in 1967, according to the Social Security Death Index. His S ocial Security number was 390–01–2759. His birth is recorded in the Wiscon sin Pre-1907 Birth Index. Osa McGough was born on May 23, 1897, issu ed SS #391–10–7934 in Wisconsin, and died in Eau Claire in March, 1989, ac cording to the Social Security Death Index. The Index to Eau Claire Co. Ar ea Obituaries and Death Notices, Vol. 1 (Genealogical Research Socie ty of Eau Claire) shows Osa McGough with a date of death (or perhaps the d ate of the obituary) of March 21, 1989, and burial in Lake View Cem..

Five other children of John Joseph McGough and Rosanna Ferrigan McGough d id not show up in the 1900 census. Two had died. Three were born after t he census was taken.

Unknown female McGough, born on August 13, 1892, in Eau Claire.

William T. McGough, born October 12, 1894, in Eau Claire, died November 0 2, 1894, in Eau Claire. The Pre-1907 Death Index shows that a William McGo ugh died in Eau Claire on November 1 or 2, 1894.

Frances McGough, born April 10, 1900, in Eau Claire. Married Harold E. Hal ling (1895–1970) on November 21, 1921, and had several children. She di ed April 13, 1993 in Minnesota. The Brides of Eau Claire Co., Wis., 1854–1 929 (Genealogical Research Society of Eau Claire, 1995) records a marria ge of Frances McGough to Harold E. Halling on December 1, 1921. The da te in this source, however, is often the date of publication of a newspap er notice of a marriage. In the 1905 Wisconsin state census, the listi ng is for Francis, a son, age 5. This is the only Francis or Frances liste d, and I assume the listing should be for Frances, a daughter.

Irene McGough,is shown by the Wisconsin Pre-1907 Birth Index as being bo rn May 02, 1901, in Eau Claire. She died in Eau Claire on May 28, 1902. T he Eau Claire Register of Deeds, vol. 2, page 24, file no. 01497, shows h er parent as John McGue, born in Ireland, and Margaret McGue, born in Wisc onsin. The Margaret is a mistake, and should have been Rosanna. The Reco rd of Internments of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Eau Claire shows t he death of Irene McGue on May 28, 1902, born in Wisconsin, at age 1. S he married Alfred Pederswon on July 3, 1926, and died in Eau Claire on Dec ember 3, 1982.

Margaret Lucille McGough, born March 20, 1904, in Eau Claire, married Alfr ed Ludwig Pederson (1903–1976) on July 3, 1926, and died December 03, 19 82 in Eau Claire. Margaret shows up as age 1 in the 1905 Wisconsin censu s. The spelling of her name and all her family, once again, is McGough, n ot McGeough.

None of his children by his first marriage to Rosanna Mooney is shown as l iving with John Joseph McGough in 1900. The 1900 federal census shows Jo hn J. McGough's three daughters by his previous marriage to Rosanna Ferrig an living together in a rented house, separate from their father and step- mother. Mary McGough, age 23 and a dressmaker, is shown as head of the hou sehold. Residing with her are her sisters Lizzie McGough, age 21, and An na McGough, age 19, both day laborers. The marital status of all thr ee is listed as single. The three McGough sisters were renting rooms in t he home of Michael and Margan Meagher.

Michael Meagher was shown as age 50 in the 1900 federal census, and as hav ing been born in Canada in December, 1849. He emigrated to the United Stat es in 1875, was employed as a carpenter, and owned the house at 1007 Seco nd Avenue in Eau Claire, free of any mortgage. His wife, Margan, was a ge 45 and born in Canada in October, 1854. Their oldest son, Francis, a ge 19, was born in Wisconsin in April, 1881. Their other children were The resa, age 16, born in December, 1883; Mary, age 14, born in March of 188 6; and Thomas J., age 12, born in July of 1887. The Meagher family is of i nterest because the mother of my great-grandmother was a Mahar (Meagher ). Charles Campbell and Elizabeth Mahar Campbell moved from Levis, Quebe c, to Eau Claire in about 1881 or 1882, and their daughter Mary Ann marri ed my grandfather, Hugh McGough, in Eau Claire on July 2, 1890.

The 1905 Wisconsin state census shows two more children of John J. and Ros ann McGough, in addition to Katie, Lottie and Leo, listed above, living wi th them at their home in Eau Claire:

Francis McGough, a son, born on April 10, 1900, listed as age 5 in the 19 05 state census. The Wisconsin Pre-1907 Birth Index shows a Frances McGou gh born in Eau Claire on April 10, 1900.

Margaret L. McGough born on March 20,1904, listed as age 1 in the 1905 sta te census, age 1. The middle initial "L" is shown by the Wisconsin Pre-19 07 Birth Index.

The 1905 state census shows the age of John McGough as 64 years old, b ut it should have been 54 since he was born on June 2, 1850. The John McGo ugh listed as age 64 is the same John Joseph McGough whom we have been dis cussing. This John McGough was born in Canada. His parents were born in Ir eland. His wife is listed as "Rosan," age 45, a reference to his second wi fe, Rosanna Ferrigan (1860–1929), not to be confused with his first wife R osanna Mooney who had died on September 30, 1884. The McGoughs are sho wn as owning their home free of mortgage.

The 1905 Wisconsin state census shows that John McGough’s three daughte rs by his first wife Rosanna Mooney had returned to reside with him and h is second wife, Rosanna Ferrigan. Children in the household in 1905, all s ingle, were three children by Rosanna Mooney: Mary McGough, age 28, a dres smaker; Lizzie McGough, age 26, occupation not shown; Annie McGough, age 2 4, Fijis (?) Dress; and five additional children: Katy McGough, age 14, st udent; Lottie McGough, age 9; Leo McGough, age 7; Francis McGough, a ge 5; Margaret McGough, age 1.

The interment records of St. Patrick's Church in Eau Claire show that Jo hn McGough died at age 75 on August 1, 1925. The family history shows Ju ly 31, 1925, as the date of death and I used that date above. The dea th of a Mrs. Rosanna McGough in Eau Claire is recorded in 1929, a nd it is safe to assume that this was Rosanna Ferrigan, and the same pers on as the Mrs. John McGough shown by other records as having died in Eau C laire at age 68 on August 2, 1929. The cause of death was listed as "old a ge." Family records, however, list her date of death in Eau Claire as Mar ch 1, 1929.
