Facts and Events
From "They came to Mara", p. 592: John McDonald and his brother, Angus McDonald, were early settlers in Mara. The McDonald brothers were both members of the Glengarry Militia; they received land patents in the year 1835. The name John McDonald was also associated with the South ½ of Lot 11 Concession 4 which he purchased from James G. Chewitt in 1839. In that same year, John McDonald and wife, Catherine (McLellan), sold this property to William McDonald of Mara. It was believed their son William was the same William who married Isabella McKenzie, the daughter of Murdoch and Jessie (McLean) McKenzie. William and Isabella lived the remainder of their lives in Mara. Another child of John and Catherine to remain in Mara was Jane. Jane married Ronald MacDonald, son of Lieutenant Alexander MacDonald; they lived in North Mara. Ann, who married Martin Waldron, lived in nearby Rama Township. Other children lived in various locations, including the United States, where one son, Archibald, was killed in action serving in the American Civil War. References
