Lyn, I have read all your postings on 12/18/07 and I am almost certain that your John is not closely related to John Robert McCrery/McCreary who was born in Ulster Ireland 1789 raised in Botetourt Co VA, married Nancy Combs and had eight children. John and Nancy both died in winter of 1839-1840 in Montgomery Co. IN. The five youngest return to Botetourt Co. VA to live with their Aunts. Amoung the five, brothers Thomas b. 1826 and John Robert b. 1826 both went to southern KY living near or with two bachelors Uncles Andrew b. 1791 and James McCrery b. 1799 whom had moved there. I personly knew some of the grandchildren of Thomas and my great grand father Eugene who was the son of John Robert McCreary b.1828.
John Robert McCrery (b.1789) father was James McCrery b. 1758 and died at Glade Creek in Botetourt Co. in 1822.This James had a brother John (d.abt 1797)who had married Hannah Patterson. They were co-owners in a store. I know John had three daughters and one son John E. McCrery who was a lawyer and the last mentioningof John E. and of one of his sister Nancy who married John W. Thompson, wasin a letter dated 1874.The scattered McCreary family kelp up a constant letter writing talking about the various cousins and relations.I have a few excerts from 1850's to abt 1880.
I do remember coming across a John McCrery who was a young man who was a merchant and he was in Bototourt Co in one of the 1800's censuses.I didn,t think him to be connected to my family.
Also in the early 1700' there were other McCrery/McCreary's in Bototourt Co. they seem to have disappeared and I don't know of any connections to them.
If you can be more specific or get a hold of the bible record you mention it could be that there is some kind of a connection as various related families and neighbors tended to move to the same areas.Hope to here more from you.
