So named because as many as 17 members of this Ohio family fought for the Union during the American Civil War. Patriarch Daniel McCook, Sr. had two sons, Daniel and John, and thirteen of their sons saw service.
Dr. George McCook 1752–1822 , and his son, Dr. George Jr., were volunteer surgeons.
Six McCooks reached general officer rank, and several were killed in action or died from their wounds. Following the war, several McCooks attained political prominence or were eminent in their professions. An eighteenth family member, John James McCook (1823-1842), died near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil while serving in the Navy.
