According to an article in the Berkchire Ealge on his brother George, the entire family was born in Ireland, and came to Pittsfield, MA after the father died. There were two brothers and four sisters. Given that John was born around 1836 and the article lists George's first job being in Pittsfield in 1851, the family must have imigrated between those dates. John appears to have been listed as a Hostler prior to enlisting in the army on July 17th, 1862 as a wagoner in Company B of the 37th Massachusetts Infantry commanded by Captain George H. Hide. He was honorably discharge at Halls Hill, Virgina on June 21st, 1865. In September of 1864 on a foraging expidition the wagon he was in charge off ran against the stump of a tree and he was thrown to the ground. THis caused a injury to his right knee, which along with his rheumatism made him unfit to perform manual laber.

After his service in the army, he moved to Lee, Massachusetts and was employed as a coachman.

A discription of him is given in a document that certifies his disability due to the war injury. According to the document he was Age 29 at the time of discharge. He was 5 ft 5 and 3/4 inches, had a medium complection, brown hair and blue eyes.

On Febuary 23rd, 1886, he was certified to be placed on the invalid pension roll of the Unted States by Judge John Boamming of Lee, MA. In a pension document dated March 12th, 1898 he is listed as a widower who wass married in Pittsfield, MA by Rev. Mr. Cuddy. It lists him as having three daughters, Lizzie Ann, ? Ellen, and Mary Jane. Thier ages were 25, 20 and 29.

His sister Catherine Cummings and brother george McCann survived him.
