On the 1881 Census John McAllister lists his family's occupation as pudler. Pudlers worked in the iron foundry, a dangerous job that required great physical strength,intense concentration and skill. The pudler would melt pig iron in a reverbaratory furnace, then stir in iron oxide to make wrought iron, a trade passed down from father to son.
