John Maximillian (1756-1840) came to America in 1795 and made his home with Juan Ignacio Pifermo at Labonillo Hacienda in Sabine County. He was a native of Austria but had been visiting his sister Marie Antoinette, at Versailles so came from France. He married Pifermo's daughter, Marie Louisa Pifermo. Their son, John Maximillian, (1782), married Anastacia Simms and had a son, John Jr., (1812), born at Lobonillo Hacienda which John had inherited from Pifermo. John Maximillian Jr. was a member of the army that engaged in the Battle of Nacogdoches (August 1832) against the Mexican army that occupied the Old Stone Fort. Before the order to charge, James Bullock promised his men that in the event that they won the battle, he would reward the first man who entered the fort with a deed to the Old Stone Fort and the land on which it stood. John Maximillian was that man, but his home was Lobonillo Hacienda in Sabine County, so he traded the fort for a spotted pony and rode away. John Jr. married Polly Christy in 1835 and in 1836 had a son, John J. Maximillian who attended State School in Many, Louisiana, and finished at the age of 17. He spoke five languages. He married Sarah Ann Brooks, born in Alabama in 1846, in Many in 1866. It is not known when they returned to Texas, but he and his family of nine children moved to Bronson, Texas, in 1903. There he died and was buried in 1924. His daughter, Maude Jane (1886-1980) was married to James Arnold Tipton (1884-1924) and they were my parents. Some time during the last generation the name was shortened for convenience, but not by law. For this reason all of the descendants now living go by the name of Maxey.
